Photos can do a lot for you
Gone are the days of page after page of static photo galleries.
But not all “motion” is good. It can, in fact, be a distraction to the reader, taking away from the
intended result.
This page, for example, has about 400% of the “fancy photo treatments” that might be deemed
acceptable in modern webpage design. It’s OK here, however, because of the “illustrative context” of
the page (no pun intended). And it’s OK on a family website to have loads of photos.

Slide shows can be presented in all sizes and

Perhaps one of the more effective utilizations of the “text/photo”
approach shown on this page, this example features a large
caption panel explaining each photo. Notice the placement of the
main photo element relative to the position of the caption panel in

Particularly useful when the subject matter of the photo leaves nothing unsaid, this approach obviously
dictates a more careful than usual selection process when choosing the actual photos to be included.
A judicious use of photo slide shows can enhance the overall effectiveness of a website, but please don’t
underestimate the importance of the word, “judicious.”
Multiple effects can be incorporated within
the same slide show…
Digital graphics, much akin to computational technology,
have also undergone lightning-paced transformation over
the past (pick any number of) years. And the web
developer’s choices have never been more robust.
